Antidepressant and cognitive effects of piperine -encapsulated liposomes (PL) were investigated in male Wistar rats. Oral piperine (5 mg/kg body weight/day) and intranasal PL (7.2 µg/day) were randomly assigned to daily administer for 14 days to rats which were subjected to forced swimming, Mor-ris water maze and spontaneous motor behavior tests. PL significantly exhibited anti-depression like activity and cognitive enhancing effects, in comparison to the control groups after the first dose (p…

Neuroprotective effects of piperine, an alkaloid from the Piper genus, on the Parkinson's disease model in rats
TLDR
PIP presented a neuroprotective action, probably a consequence of its antiinflammatory and antioxidant properties, making the drug a potential candidate for the treatment of neurodegenerative diseases as PD.
Efficient brain uptake of piperine and its pharmacokinetics characterization after oral administration
TLDR
It is demonstrated high brain penetration potency of piperine could be resulted from its high brain tissue affinity and membrane permeability together with its limited liver metabolism.
Role of piperine in CNS diseases: pharmacodynamics, pharmacokinetics and drug interactions
TLDR
The current review provides an updated summary on CNS activities of p Piperine, including anti-epileptic, anti-depressive and neurodegeneration protection effect, and interactions between piperine and CNS drugs are illustrated for the first time.
Pharmacological, toxicological and neuronal localization assessment of galantamine/chitosan complex nanoparticles in rats: future potential contribution in Alzheimer’s disease management
TLDR
The pharmacological efficacy and in vivo safety of nasal CX-NP2 confirm their promising potential to contribute to the management of AD intranasally.
Design and Application in Delivery System of Intranasal Antidepressants
TLDR
This review focused on the latest strategies for delivery carriers (or formation) of intranasal antidepressants in clinical studies, including nanogels, nanostructured lipid, liposomes nanoparticles, nanoemulsions/microemulsion, and so on.
In-vitro anti-cholinesterase activities by piperine, an alkaloid from the spice family Piperaceae
TLDR
Although the AChE inhibition by p Piperine is not as potent as that of galanthamine, in addition to its known antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities, piperine could provide a novel poly-pharmacological lead of potential benefit for the symptomatic treatment of AD and therefore warrants further investigation.
Oral Brain-Targeted Microemulsion for Enhanced Piperine Delivery in Alzheimer’s Disease Therapy: In Vitro Appraisal, In Vivo Activity, and Nanotoxicity
TLDR
Preparing microemulsion as a proposed oral PIP nanocarrier for treatment of Alzheimer’s disease and testing its safety on the brain and other internal organs showed a superior effect of ME over free PIP, and toxicological results showed a potential ME nephrotoxicity.
Intranasal Piperine-Loaded Chitosan Nanoparticles as Brain-Targeted Therapy in Alzheimer's Disease: Optimization, Biological Efficacy, and Potential Toxicity.
TLDR
This work was the first to report additional mechanism of PIP in AD via anti-apoptosis and anti-inflammatory effects via dual mechanism (Ach esterase inhibition and antioxidant effect) through mono-disperse intranasal chitosan nanoparticles.
Effects of resveratrol alone or in combination with piperine on cerebral blood flow parameters and cognitive performance in human subjects: a randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled, cross-over investigation
TLDR
The results indicated that when co-supplemented, piperine and resveratrol significantly augmented CBF during task performance in comparison with placebo and res veratrol alone, and does this without altering bioavailability, and cognitive function, mood and blood pressure were not affected.
Comparative Evaluation of Anti-Depressant Activity of Glycyrrhiza Glabra and Piper Nigrum Combination with Individual Drugs Effects and Standard Drug Imipramine in Mice
TLDR
The results indicate that Glycyrrh iza glabra and Piper nigrum if given in combination s safe and Combination drug therapy has better res ults than the individual dosage but standard showed optimum results.

Antidepressant-like effects of piperine and its derivative, antiepilepsirine
TLDR
The research results indicated that after two weeks of chronic administration, PIP and AES at doses of 10–20 mg/kg significantly reduced the duration of immobility in both FST and TST, without accompanying changes in locomotor activity in the open-field test.
Piperine, the potential functional food for mood and cognitive disorders.
Piperine, the main alkaloid of Thai black pepper, protects against neurodegeneration and cognitive impairment in animal model of cognitive deficit like condition of Alzheimer's disease.
Piperine from the fruits of Piper longum with inhibitory effect on monoamine oxidase and antidepressant-like activity.
TLDR
The results suggest that piperine possesses potent antidepressant-like properties that are mediated in part through the inhibition of MAO activity, and therefore represent a promising pharmacotherapeutic candidate as an antidepressant agent.
Reproductive toxicity of piperine in Swiss albino mice.
TLDR
The results show that piperine interferes with several crucial reproductive events in a mammalian model of Swiss albino mice.
Simultaneous analyses of the neurochemical and behavioral effects of the norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor reboxetine in a rat model of antidepressant action
TLDR
Treatment with reboxetine in a schedule commonly used in the FST resulted in a potentiated noradrenergic response to the swim challenge concomitant with behavioral alterations consistent with antidepressant-like activity.
Comparative anti-nociceptive, anti-inflammatory and toxicity profile of nimesulide vs nimesulide and piperine combination.
TLDR
Results from the present study suggest a better therapeutic index for the nimesulide-piperine combination indicating that this combination would further reduce the frequency of adverse effects associated with nimesULide alone.
Anticonvulsant activity of piperine on seizures induced by excitatory amino acid receptor agonists.
TLDR
Piperine was shown to significantly block convulsions induced by intracerebroventricular injection of threshold doses of kainate, but to have no or only slight effects on convulsion induced by L-glutamate, N-methyl-D-aspartate or guanidinosuccinate.
