}The ability of cefotaxime, ciprofloxacin, piperacillin and tobramycin to cause release of endotoxin was examined in vitro with cultures of Enterobacter cloacae and Escherichia coli. Endotoxin was measured by a quantitative limulus amoebocyte lysate assay and its presence was confirmed by silver staining of the lipopolysaccharide moiety following SDS-PAGE. The morphology of the bacteria during antibiotic exposure was examined by scanning electronmicroscopy. Cefotaxime, ciprofloxacin and…

It is conceivable that if the gastrointestinal tract is the source of the endotoxin in patients with systemic inflammatory response syndrome, then the obligate anaerobes like Bacteroides and Fusobacterium species, which are members of the gut flora, may play a major role in the unfavorable outcome of antibiotic therapy in some of these infections.
Influence of Five Antianaerobic Antibiotics on Endotoxin Liberation by Gram-Negative Anaerobes

Seven strains of the Bacteroides fragilis group were studied for their ability to liberate endotoxin upon exposure to five anti-anaerobic antibiotics, to varying degrees, and all five antibiotics had the capacity to induce endotoxin liberation by Gram-negative anaerobic bacteria.

The propensity to liberate endotoxin is higher after the second dose of cefuroxime than after the first, resulting in a higher release of endotoxin than expected from bacterial count, which can be reduced by the addition of tobramycin.
