The preventive effect of natural xanthanolides as well as a series of synthetic derivatives on ulcer formation induced by absolute ethanol in rats was examined. Among the compounds tested, xanthatin gave the strongest protective activity. The inhibitory action exerted by this molecule on the lesions induced by 0.6N HCl and 0.2N NaOH was highly significant, reducing ulceration in the range of 58-96% at a dose from 12.5 to 100mg/kg. These results appear to confirm that the presence of a non… Expand
The anti-ulcer activities of bisabolangelone from Angelica polymorpha.
TLDR
Bisabolangelone is the main anti-ulcer active compound of Angelica polymorpha, and remarkably preventive and therapeutic action on gastric ulcer. Expand
Effect of a Cytoprotective Dose of Dehydroleucodine, Xanthatin, and 3-Benzyloxymethyl-5H-furan-2-one on Gastric Mucosal Lesions Induced by Mast Cell Activation
TLDR
The results of the present study indicate that the optimal gastric cytoprotective dose of dehydroleucodine, xanthatin, and 3-benzyloxymethyl-5H-furan-2-one is efficacious in an animal model of gastric ulcer induced by mast cell activation. Expand
Quantitative Structure-Activity Relationship of Sesquiterpene Lactones with Anti-Ulcerogenic Activity

Biological Activities of Xanthatin from Xanthium strumarium Leaves
TLDR
Data taken together suggest that xanthatin exerts its biological activity by inducing apoptosis and inhibiting both PGE2 synthesis and 5‐lipoxygenase activity thereby avoiding unwanted inflammation commonly observed in diseases such as trypanosomiasis. Expand
STUDY ON RADICAL SCAVENGING AND GASTROPROTECTIVE EFFECTS OF ETHANOLIC STEM-BARK EXTRACT OF CARPOLOBIA LUTEA IN RODENTS

Novel anti-ulcer alpha,beta-unsaturated lactones inhibit compound 48/80-induced mast cell degranulation.
TLDR
The present study provides the first strong evidence in favour of the hypothesis that dehydroleucodine, xanthatin and 3-benzyloxymethyl-5H-furan-2-one inhibit compound 48/80-induced serotonin release from peritoneal mast cells, acting thus as mast cell stabilizers. Expand
The investigation of the potential anti-depressant like activity of Xanthium orientale subsp. italicum (Moretti) Greuter in rodents.
TLDR
The MeOH extract of the plant was found to possess antidepressant-like activity and xanthatin and xanthinosin were determined as the main active components of the leaves. Expand

Structure-activity relationship in the gastric cytoprotective effect of several sesquiterpene lactones.
TLDR
The biological evaluation of reduced analogues and the simulation of the molecular interactions between these compounds and an endogenous cysteine residue suggest that the presence of a non sterically hindered Michael acceptor seems to be an essential structural requirement for the cytoprotective activity in this family of compounds. Expand
Mucus synthesis and sulfhydryl groups in cytoprotection mediated by dehydroleucodine, a sesquiterpene lactone.
TLDR
It was found that pretreatment of rats with 1 caused a significant increase in glycoprotein synthetic activity, approximately sevenfold as large as that of the control, and the protective effect of 1 was not totally abolished by pretreatment with a combination of indomethacin and NEM, indicating additional mechanisms are involved in the cytoprotective action of 1. Isolation of anti-ulcerogenic sesquiterpene lactones from Centaurea solstitialis L. ssp. solstitialis through bioassay-guided fractionation procedures in rats.
TLDR
Ethanol (80%) extract of CSS exhibited significant anti-ulcerogenic effect on the ethanol-induced ulcerogenesis model in rats, and the effect of the chloroform fraction was found to be more prominent with 99.5% ulcer inhibition. Expand
Gastric cytoprotective activity of dehydroleucodine in rats. Role of prostaglandins.
TLDR
The gastric protective activity of DhL against ethanol induced gastric mucosal damage is mediated, at least in part, through PGE and PGE2 in subchronic treatment, suggesting the participation of endogenous prostaglandins in DhL protection against ethanol damage. Expand
