The advanced-age, frail elderly are especially vulnerable to developing pneumococcal infection and disease. Macrophages are critical mediators in the defence against Streptococcus pneumoniae at the upper respiratory tract, however, little is known of their anti-pneumococcal capacity in the elderly.
