Bromelain is a crude aquaeous extract obtained from both the stem and fruit of the pineapple plant, which contains a number of proteolytic enzymes. The analgesic and anti-inflammatory activities of bromelain were investigated. Bromelain was evaluated for anti-inflammatory effect by carrageen-induced rat paw edema. The analgesic activity was tested by acetic acid-induced writhing response and hot plate method in albino mice. Twenty adult male Balb/c mice (20-25 g) were used to evaluate the… Expand
Enhancement of the Anti-inflammatory Effect of Bromelain by Its Immobilization on Probiotic Spore of Bacillus cereus
TLDR
The results showed that used alone, the enzyme and the spores produced oedema inhibition and improved the motility of the rats, and the spore-immobilized bromelain formulation performed approximately 0.9-fold better than the free bromalain and the free spores at the lower evaluated dose. Expand
The Analgesic Effect of Pineapple Fruit Juice on Mice
TLDR
Pineapple fruit juice concentrations (20, 40%, and 80%) has an analgesic effect with the most optimal concentration of 40%. Expand
EFFECT OF METHANOLIC EXTRACT OF ANANAS COMOSUS LEAVES ON GLUCOSE TOLERANCE AND ACETIC ACID-INDUCED PAIN IN SWISS ALBINO MICE
TLDR
Preliminary phytochemical screening showed presence of alkaloids, flavonoids, saponins and tannins in the extract, which components can be responsible for the observed blood glucose lowering and analgesic effects. Expand
Antinociceptive and neuroprotective effects of bromelain in chronic constriction injury-induced neuropathic pain in Wistar rats
TLDR
It is suggested that bromelain mitigated neuropathic pain by enhancing the activities of nuclear transcription factors (NrF-1 and NRF-2) which increases the antioxidant defense system that abolish neuronal stress and structural disorganization. Expand
Enhancement of anti-inflammatory activity of bromelain by its encapsulation in katira gum nanoparticles.
TLDR
Investigation of their in vivo anti-inflammatory activity by employing carrageenan induced rat-paw oedema method showed that encapsulation of bromelain in katira gum nanoparticles substantially enhanced its anti- inflammatory potential. Expand
Evaluation of the probiotic attributes of Bacillus strains isolated from traditional fermented African locust bean seeds (Parkia biglobosa), “daddawa”
TLDR
Results indicate that the Bacillus cultures used in the fermentation of African locust bean seeds into the food condiment “daddawa” are good candidates for probiotics and have the potential for application in both animal and human formulations for increased health benefit to consumers. Expand
Effect of seedling size and flowering time on fruit quality, secondary metabolite production and bioactivity of pineapple [Ananas comosus (L.) Merr. var. ‘Yankee’] fruits
TLDR
Results suggested that A. comosus L. Yankee fruits contain various pharmacologically important phytoconstituents which can be further exploited for various uses. Expand

Antinociceptive, anti-inflammatory and acute toxicity effects of Zataria multiflora Boiss extracts in mice and rats.
TLDR
It is concluded that aqueous infusion and maceration of the aerial parts of Z. multiflora Boiss have antinociceptive effect and this may be mediated by opioid receptors and the extracts showed also anti-inflammatory effect against acute and chronic inflammation. Expand
Anti-nociceptive and anti-inflammatory properties of Caralluma arabica.
TLDR
Results of the present study confirm the use of C. arabica traditionally for the treatment of painful and inflammatory conditions and indicate transdermal absorption of the plant extract. Expand
Anti inflammatory property of ethanol and water extracts of Zingiber Zerumbet
TLDR
The aqueous extract of Zingiber zerumbet elicited dose-dependent antiinflammatory activity and the ethanolic extract was devoid of any antiinflammatory effect with 25 to 100 mg/kg concentrations. Expand

TLDR
These studies demonstrate that bromelain enzymes can remain intact and proteolytically active within the murine gastrointestinal tract and provide further support for the hypothesis that oral bromELain may potentially modify inflammation within the gastrointestinal tract via local proteolytic activity within the colonic microenvironment. Bromelain as a Treatment for Osteoarthritis: a Review of Clinical Studies
TLDR
The mechanism of its putative therapeutic actions, those clinical trials that have assessed its use in osteoarthritis to date, as well as considering the safety implications of this supplement for osteoartritis and reviewing the evidence to date regarding the dosage for treating this condition are reviewed. Effects of oral bromelain administration on the impaired immunocytotoxicity of mononuclear cells from mammary tumor patients.
TLDR
It is suggested, that orally applied bromelain stimulates the deficient monocytic cytotoxicity of mammary tumor patients, which may partially explain its proposed antitumor activity. Expand
Bromelain, from pineapple stems, proteolytically blocks activation of extracellular regulated kinase-2 in T cells.
TLDR
Bromelain, a mixture of cysteine proteases from pineapple stems, is a novel inhibitor of T cell signal transduction and suggests a novel role for extracellular proteases as inhibitors of intracellular signalTransduction pathways. Expand
