Anti-glomerular basement membrane disease (anti-GBM) is a rare but well-characterized cause of glomerulonephritis. It is defined by the presence of autoantibodies directed at specific antigenic targets within the glomerular and/or pulmonary basement membrane. These antibodies bind to the a3 chain of type IV collagen found in these specialized basement membranes.
