This is a pedagogic account of some of the global properties of Anti-de-Sitter spacetime with a view to their application to the AdS/CFT correspondence. Particular care is taken over the distinction between Anti-de-Sitter and it's covering space. Written version of lectures given at 2nd Samos Meeting held at at Pythagoreon, Samos, Greece, 31 August - 4 September 1998 and published as Anti-de-Sitter spacetime and its uses, in Mathematical and Quantum Aspects of Relativity and Cosmology…

New Dynamics in the Anti-de Sitter Universe AdS5

This paper deals with the propagation of the gravitational waves in the Poincaré patch of the 5-dimensional Anti-de Sitter universe. We construct a large family of unitary dynamics with respect to

Simple generalizations of anti-de Sitter spacetime

We consider new cosmological solutions which generalize the cosmological patch of the anti-de Sitter (AdS) spacetime, allowing for fluids with equations of state such that w ≠ −1. We use them to

The Dirac System on the Anti-de Sitter Universe

We investigate the global solutions of the Dirac equation on the Anti- de-Sitter Universe. Since this space is not globally hyperbolic, the Cauchy problem is not, a priori, well-posed. Nevertheless

Singularities in and Stability of Ooguri-Vafa-Verlinde Cosmologies

Ooguri, Vafa, and Verlinde have recently proposed an approach to string cosmology which is based on the idea that cosmological string moduli should be selected by a Hartle-Hawking wave function. They

Dynamics in non-globally-hyperbolic static spacetimes: III. Anti-de Sitter spacetime

In recent years, there has been considerable interest in theories formulated in anti-de Sitter (AdS) spacetime. However, AdS spacetime fails to be globally hyperbolic, so a classical field satisfying

On the AdS/CFT correspondence and quantum entanglement

String theory provides one of the most deepest insights into quantum gravity. Its single most central and profound result is the gauge/gravity duality, i.e. the emergence of gravity from gauge

The Arithmetic Geometry of AdS2 and its Continuum Limit

According to the 't Hooft-Susskind holography, the black hole entropy is carried by microscopic degrees of freedom, which live in the near horizon region and have a Hilbert space of states of finite

Embedding FLRW geometries in pseudo-Euclidean and anti-de Sitter spaces

Contrary to the general consensus in the literature that Friedmann--Lema\^{i}tre--Robertson--Walker (FLRW) geometries are of embedding class one (i.e.\ embeddable in one higher dimensional

On closed anti de Sitter spacetimes

This article deals with the structure of the fundamental group of compact anti de Sitter spacetimes, i.e. Lorentz manifolds with constant negative curvature. Algebraically such a manifold is the

A New approach to string cosmology

We discuss quotients of Anti-de Sitter (AdS) spacetime by a discrete group in light of the AdS-CFT correspondence. Some quotients describe closed universes which expand from zero volume to a maximum

Existence of Majorana fermions for M-branes wrapped in space and time

We show that it is possible to define Majorana (s)pinor fields on M-branes which have been identified under the action of the antipodal map on the adS factor of the throat geometry, or which have

Rotation and the AdS / CFT correspondence

In asymptotically flat space a rotating black hole cannot be in thermodynamic equilibrium because the thermal radiation would have to be co-rotating faster than light far from the black hole. However

This last point ensures that the neighborhood of any point of these de Sitter spaces behaves like the flat space of special relativity (Minkowski space).

The AdS / CFT correspondence and a new positive energy conjecture for general relativity

We examine the AdS-CFT correspondence when gauge theory is considered on a compactified space with supersymmetry-breaking boundary conditions. We find that the corresponding supergravity solution has

Quantum field theory in anti-de Sitter space-time

We consider the problem of quantizing scalar fields propagating in anti--de Sitter space-time. This space-time is static but not globally hyperbolic and hence the usual quantization procedures are
