Hemodialysis patients face an elevated risk of cancer, arteriosclerosis, and other diseases, ascribed in part to increased oxidative stress. Red fruit juice with high anthocyanin/polyphenol content had been shown to reduce oxidative damage in healthy probands. To test its preventive potential in hemodialysis patients, 21 subjects in a pilot intervention study consumed 200 mL/day of red fruit juice (3-week run-in; 4-week juice uptake; 3-week wash-out). Weekly blood sampling was done to monitor…
Antioxidative activity and health benefits of anthocyanin-rich fruit juice in healthy volunteers
Abstract Oxidative cell damage has been linked to the pathogenesis of numerous diseases such as atherosclerosis, type 2 diabetes, and cancer. The consumption of foods rich in polyphenols (e.g.
Anthocyanins from fruit juices improve the antioxidant status of healthy young female volunteers without affecting anti-inflammatory parameters: results from the randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled, cross-over ANTHONIA (ANTHOcyanins in Nutrition Investigation Alliance) study
TLDR
In ingestion of ACN-rich beverages improves antioxidant enzyme activities and plasma antioxidant capacity, thus protecting the body against oxidative stress, a hallmark of ongoing atherosclerosis.
Unfermented grape juice reduce genomic damage on patients undergoing hemodialysis.
Effects of a Carrot Juice Intervention on Plasma Carotenoids, Oxidative Stress, and Inflammation in Overweight Breast Cancer Survivors
TLDR
Daily intake of fresh carrot juice is a simple and effective approach to increasing plasma total carotenoids and in turn reducing oxidative stress, but not inflammatory markers, in women previously treated for breast cancer.
Protection from DNA Damage by Use of an Aronia Food Supplement—Results from a Pilot Human Intervention Study
TLDR
This explorative study yields first indications on protective effects on DNA damage after intake of even small volumes of polyphenol-rich food supplements.
Berries and oxidative stress markers: an overview of human intervention studies.
TLDR
Much remains to be elucidated before a comprehensive understanding of the effects of berries on the modulation of oxidative stress markers is achieved, but there is indication that the consumption of berries may reduce oxidative stress by modulating protein and lipid oxidation, and by improving total antioxidant status.

An anthocyanin/polyphenolic‐rich fruit juice reduces oxidative DNA damage and increases glutathione level in healthy probands
TLDR
The fruit juice clearly reduces oxidative cell damage in healthy probands, and the other biomarkers were not significantly modulated by the juice supplement.
Fruit juice consumption modulates antioxidative status, immune status and DNA damage.
A vegetable/fruit concentrate with high antioxidant capacity has no effect on biomarkers of antioxidant status in male smokers.
TLDR
No effects were demonstrated on any marker of oxidative damage to lipids, proteins and DNA, proteins (carbonyls) and DNA (Comet assay) and (functional) markers of oxidative stress (reduced/oxidized glutathione ratio), and apparently, increased levels of antioxidants in serum were not sufficiently high to show beneficial changes with the selected biomarkers.
Concentrated red grape juice exerts antioxidant, hypolipidemic, and antiinflammatory effects in both hemodialysis patients and healthy subjects.
TLDR
Dietary supplementation with concentrated RGJ improves the lipoprotein profile, reduces plasma concentrations of inflammatory biomarkers and oxidized LDL, and may favor a reduction in cardiovascular disease risk.
No effect of 600 grams fruit and vegetables per day on oxidative DNA damage and repair in healthy nonsmokers.
TLDR
After 24 days of complete depletion of fruits and vegetables, or daily ingestion of 600 g of fruit and vegetables or the corresponding amount of vitamins and minerals, the level of oxidative DNA damage was unchanged, suggesting that the inherent antioxidant defense mechanisms are sufficient to protect circulating mononuclear blood cells from reactive oxygen species.
DNA Oxidative Damage in Patients with Dialysis Treatment
TLDR
Vitamin E supplementation reduced oxidative DNA damage in both HD and PD patients, and increased plasma vitamin E levels significantly contribute to the normalization of these events.
Effects of Hemodialysis, Dialyser Type and Iron Infusion on Oxidative Stress in Uremic Patients
TLDR
The results show an increased oxidative damage in HD-patients, compared to healthy volunteers.
The 6-a-day study: effects of fruit and vegetables on markers of oxidative stress and antioxidative defense in healthy nonsmokers.
TLDR
Fruit and vegetables increase erythrocyte glutathione peroxidase activity and resistance of plasma lipoproteins to oxidation more efficiently than do the vitamins and minerals that fruit and vegetables are known to contain.
