The study of serotonin-4 (5-HT4) receptors in the central nervous system has been hindered by the lack of effective, selective antagonists. However, recently, several novel compounds have been synthesized and shown to act as antagonists at 5-HT4 receptors in smooth muscle and embryonic neurons in culture.
