Another bar in the Bulge

A map of the projected density of the old stellar population of the Galactic Bulge region is reconstructed using 2MASS data. By making a combination of the H and K photometric bands, it is possible to overcome the eect of reddening, and thus penetrate the inner structure of the Galactic Bulge. The main structure in the map corresponds to the well documented peanut shaped bar which is formed by the inner parts of the Galactic disk as a result of dynamical instabilities. As suggested by numerical…

Context. Over the last decade a series of results have lent support to t he hypothesis of the existence of a long thin bar in the Milky Way with a half-length of 4.5 kpc and a position angle of…
Stellar populations in the Milky Way bulge region: towards solving the Galactic bulge and bar shapes using 2MASS data

Abstract We review the observational evidences concerning the three-dimensional structure of the Galactic bulge. Although the inner few kpc of our Galaxy are normally referred to as the bulge, all…

Context. The gas distribution and dynamics in the inner Galaxy present many unknowns, such as the origin of the asymmetry of the lu-diagram of the Central Molecular Zone (CMZ). On the other hand,…
The Long Bar in the Milky Way: Corroboration of an Old Hypothesis

THE DISTRIBUTION OF STARS AND STELLAR REMNANTS AT THE GALACTIC CENTER

Motivated by recent observations that suggest a low density of old stars around the Milky Way supermassive black hole (SMBH), models for the nuclear star cluster are considered that have not yet…
The inner Galactic bar traced by the VVV survey
- 2011
Physics
Aims. We use the VVV survey observations in bulge regions close to the Galactic plane to trace the bar inclination at the Galactic latitude b ∼± 1 and to investigate a distinct structure in the inner…

New evidence for a long thin Galactic bar (in contradistinction to the bulge), as well as for the existence of the ring and the truncation of the inner disc, are sought in the DENIS survey. First, we…
