Surveys were conducted in 12 Mayan communities neighboring the Los Petenes Biosphere Reserve to learn about their perceptions of crocodiles. For the people in the area, there are two species of crocodiles in this region, a big one with large head and a “fat” one with a wide head. Fifty-four percent of the people surveyed thought that the crocodile is a dangerous animal, and 30% said that it is harmless.
