We review and clarify the cancellation conditions for gauge anomalies which occur when N = 1, D = 4 supergravity is coupled to a Kahler non-linear sigma-model with gauged isometries and Fayet-Iliopoulos couplings. For a flat sigma-model target space and van- ishing Fayet-Iliopoulos couplings, consistency requires just the conventional anomaly cancellation conditions. A consistent model with non-vanishing Fayet-Iliopoulos cou- plings is unlikely unless the Green-Schwarz mechanism is used. In…

Kahler Anomalies in Supergravity and Flux Vacua

We review the subject of Kahler anomalies in gauged supergravity, emphasizing that field equations are inconsistent when the Kahler potential is non-invariant under gauge transformations or when

Comments on the Fayet-Iliopoulos term in field theory and supergravity

A careful analysis of the Fayet-Iliopoulos (FI) model shows that its energy momentum tensor and supersymmetry current are not gauge invariant. Since the corresponding charges are gauge invariant, the

On the inconsistency of Fayet-Iliopoulos terms in supergravity theories

Motivated by recent discussions, we revisit the issue of whether globally supersymmetric theories with nonzero Fayet-Iliopoulos terms may be consistently coupled to supergravity. In particular, we

Electric/magnetic duality for chiral gauge theories with anomaly cancellation

We show that 4D gauge theories with Green-Schwarz anomaly cancellation and possible generalized Chern-Simons terms admit a formulation that is manifestly covariant with respect to electric/magnetic

Generalized Chern-Simons Terms and Chiral Anomalies in N=1 Supersymmetry

The gauging of axionic, Stueckelberg-type, shift symmetries with generalized Chern-Simons terms and the Green-Schwarz mechanism of anomaly cancellation has recently been studied in the context of

Symplectic structure of supergravity with anomalies and Chern–Simons terms

The general actions of matter-coupled supergravity have Peccei–Quinn terms that may violate gauge and supersymmetry invariance. In addition, supergravity with vector multiplets may also contain

Gauged R-symmetry and its anomalies in 4D N=1 supergravity and phenomenological implications

A bstractWe consider a class of models with gauged U(1)R symmetry in 4D N=1 super-gravity that have, at the classical level, a metastable ground state, an infinitesimally small (tunable) positive

Phenomenological aspects of supergravity theories in de Sitter vacua

We introduce an $N=1$ supergravity model based on the gauged shift symmetry of a single chiral multiplet, which can be identified with the string dilaton or a compactification modulus. The model

Comments on anomaly cancellations by pole subtractions and ghost instabilities with gravity

We investigate some aspects of anomaly cancellation realized by the subtraction of an anomaly pole, stressing on some of its properties in superspace. In a local formulation, these subtractions can

Canceling the U(1) Anomaly in the S Matrix of N=4 Supergravity.

Detailed evidence is provided that at one loop such anomalous amplitudes can be set to zero by the addition of a finite local counterterm and it is shown that the same counterterm also cancels evanescent contributions that play an important role in the analysis of ultraviolet divergences in dimensionally regularized gravity.

Fayet–Iliopoulos terms in supergravity and cosmology

We clarify the structure of N = 1 supergravity in 1+3 dimensions with constant Fayet–Iliopoulos (FI) terms. The FI terms gξ induce non-vanishing R-charges for the fermions and the superpotential.

Sigma-model symmetry in orientifold models

We investigate in the simplest compact D = 4 N = 1 type-II B orientifold models the sigma-model symmetry suggested by the proposed duality of these models to heterotic orbifold vacua. This symmetry
