The monotypic genus Ankumia is associated with the rich cytherellid fauna described by van Veen (1932) from the Upper Cretaceous (late Maastrichtian) rocks of South Limburg, The Netherlands. The type species (A. bosqueti van Veen, 1932) is redescribed because the genus possesses the enigmatic combination of cytherellid (posterior sex-dimorphism and R/L overlap) and eridostracan (several concentric bands) characters. As no holotype was designated, the redescription is based on a detailed SEM… Expand

Figures and Tables from this paper

Ankumia van Veen, 1932 retained and not replaced by the junior taxon Platella Coryell & Fields, 1937 (Ostracoda, Platycopina, Cytherelloidea)
TLDR
Although there is no doubt about the cytherellid relationship of the species, two taxonomical questions still remain. Expand
Ankumia van Veen, 1932: a valid name, but a flawed generic concept (Ostracoda, Platycopina, Cytherelloidea)

TLDR
The author disagrees with this statement because he described and illustrated two morphological shell-types among the specimens assigned as syntypes of Ankumia bosqueti in the van Veen/Bonnema collection, which correspond to the ‘normal’ species, and to the pathological individuals of that species, respectively. Expand
Morphology and affinities of Eridostracina: Palaeozoic ostracods with moult retention
TLDR
The morphology of the eridostracine Cryptophyllus socialis from the Upper Devonian of Russia is reconstructed using the process of exfoliation of successive exuviae, and it is suggested that the main function of these structures was the strengthening of the connection between the accumulated valves. Expand
Sexual discrimination at work: Spinicaudatan ‘Clam Shrimp’ (Crustacea: Branchiopoda) as a model organism for the study of sexual system evolution
TLDR
This study begins to successfully utilize the fossil record of the Spinicaudata to elucidate ancient sexual systems, which will likely have far reaching implications for the understanding of the evolutionary dynamics of sexual systems over geologic timescales. Expand
