We show that specially designed two-dimensional arrangements of full elastic cylinders embedded in a nonviscous fluid or gas define (in the homogenization limit) a new class of acoustic metamaterials characterized by a dynamical effective mass density that is anisotropic. Here, analytic expressions for the dynamical mass density and the effective sound velocity tensors are derived in the long wavelength limit. Both show an explicit dependence on the lattice filling fraction, the elastic…
Intrinsic anisotropy of the effective acoustic properties in metafluids made of two-dimensional cylinder arrays
Within a unified theoretical framework, we extract the omnidirectional effective acoustic parameters for the metafluid consisting of isotropic fluid cylinders embedded in an isotropic fluid
Design and measurements of a broadband two-dimensional acoustic metamaterial with anisotropic effective mass density
We present the experimental realization and characterization of a broadband acoustic metamaterial with strongly anisotropic effective mass density. The metamaterial is composed of arrays of solid
Double-negative acoustic metamaterials based on quasi-two-dimensional fluid-like shells
A structured cylindrical scatterer with low-frequency resonances in both the effective bulk modulus and the dynamical mass density is designed and characterized. The proposed scattering unit is made
Metafluid with anisotropic dynamic mass
We show that a fluid filling the space between metallic cylinders arranged in a two-dimensional lattice exhibits anisotropic dynamic mass for sound waves propagating through the lattice, if its unit
Metasolid with anisotropic mass density
We have developed a homogenization theory for solid phononic crystals which is valid for arbitrary Bravais lattice and any form of inclusions in the unit cell. The theory provides explicit
Anisotropic dynamic mass density for fluid–solid composites
Abstract By taking the low frequency limit of multiple-scattering theory, we obtain the dynamic effective mass density of fluid–solid composites with a two-dimensional rectangular lattice structure.
Pentamode metamaterials with independently tailored bulk modulus and mass density
We propose a class of linear elastic three-dimensional metamaterials for which the effective parameters bulk modulus and mass density can be adjusted independently over a large range|which is not
Manipulating acoustic flow by using inhomogeneous anisotropic density-near-zero metamaterials
Anisotropic density-near-zero (ADNZ) metamaterials, with only one component of the mass density tensor near zero, have been proposed and used to manipulate the flow of the acoustic energy in designed
Locally resonant acoustic metamaterials with 2D anisotropic effective mass density
A two-dimensional (2D) lattice model with anisotropic resonant microstructures is found to provide an anisotropic band gap structure. A 2D continuum with anisotropic effective mass density is
Effective Mass Density of a Periodic Array of Acoustic Media by Homogenization Analysis
Effective mass densities of periodic microstructures were posed in different forms for waves propagating in solid-in-fluid composite materials. In this study, we develop a homogenization analysis to

Effective mass density of fluid-solid composites.
The dynamic mass density expression, first derived by Berryman more than two decades ago, is shown to give a closer correspondence between the acoustic and electromagnetic metamaterials by allowing for negative mass densities at frequencies around resonances.
Acoustic metamaterials for new two-dimensional sonic devices
It has been shown that two-dimensional arrays of rigid or fluidlike cylinders in a fluid or a gas define, in the limit of large wavelengths, a class of acoustic metamaterials whose effective
Effective parameters of clusters of cylinders embedded in a nonviscous fluid or gas

Homogenization of two-dimensional clusters of rigid rods in air.
Evidence is presented indicating the validity of the homogenization in this cluster at frequencies lower than 3 kHz, which corresponds to a wavelength that is only 4 times the parameter of the embedded lattice and is a quarter of the cluster's diameter.
In this Letter, we present a theoretical analysis of the acoustic transmission through two-dimensional arrays of straight rigid cylinders placed parallelly in the air. Both periodic and completely
Speed of sound in periodic elastic composites.
We consider the low-frequency limit (homogenization) for propagation of sound waves in periodic elastic medium (phononic crystals). Exact analytical formulas for the speed of sound propagating in a
One path to acoustic cloaking
A complete analysis of coordinate transformations in elastic media by Milton et al has shown that, in general, the equations of motion are not form invariant and thus do not admit transformation-type
Two-dimensional scattering by a homogeneous anisotropic rod
An integral equation based on a plane wave representation of the fields in a simply connected and anisotropic medium has been derived in order to handle the problem of two-dimensional scattering by a

We show here the existence of acoustic metamaterial, in which both the effective density and bulk modulus are simultaneously negative, in the true and strict sense of an effective medium. Our
Effective elastic parameters of the two-dimensional phononic crystal.
The effective acoustic velocity along two highly symmetric directions of the first Brillouin zone is studied in a two-dimensional squarely arranged solid-solid phononic crystal. The relationship
