The propose cause of AKF might be a pathological alteration either in the walls of blood vessels their support. Imperial and Helwig consider the pathogenesis of AKF due to injury the capillaries e.g. trauma and chronic irritation. It is also believed that atrophy of dartos muscle and degeneration of elastic tissue incidental to senility also plays a role in loss of support of blood vessels.
