Anemia is frequent in cancer patients and its incidence increases with chemotherapy. The probability of requiring transfusions also increases with chemotherapy. Anemia negatively impacts survival and accentuates fatigue in cancer patients. Cancer promotes inflammatory cytokine production, which suppresses erythropoiesis and erythropoietin (EPO) production.
