OBJECTIVE .We hypothesized that in addition to dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA) depletion, Sjögren's syndrome (SS) is characterized by local androgen deficiency in salivary glands and defects in local processing of DHEA. METHODS Sex steroid levels in serum and saliva were measured using enzyme immunoassays.
