Ancient Northern California shows a distinctive burial pattern between 4500 and 2500 years ago, with coastal peoples burying their dead in flexed position and Sacramento Valley peoples burying their dead in extended position with the head pointing west. It has been hypothesized that Penutian speakers brought with them into the Sacramento Valley not only a distinctive burial style but also a unique genetic composition.
