Sulfur was one of the raw materials of the gunpowder manufactured by the ancient Chinese, but how it was obtained has not been explained. The records on this subject are scarce, and what does exist is ambiguous. This article explores the origin of sulfur in China, analyzing and systematizing the relevant literature. It is shown that the Chinese knew that sulfur could be extracted from pyrite at least as early as the third century A.D. The study also clarifies the sulfur manufacturing process… Expand
