96 97 Introduction It is well known that a number of ships have been wrecked off Goa, India, due to submerged rocks, reefs, sand-bars and storms. Marine and other related records kept in the Goa State Archives at Panaji and India House in Lisbon document some of them. Marine archaeological explorations have been carried out in Sunchi Reef, Grande Island and Aguada waters since 1997 with the main objective to locate shipwrecks (Fig. 1).
