Anatomy of Annotation Schemes: Mapping to GrAF
@inproceedings{Ide2010AnatomyOA, title={Anatomy of Annotation Schemes: Mapping to GrAF}, author={Nancy Ide and Harry Bunt}, booktitle={Law}, year={2010} }
In this paper, we apply the annotation scheme design methodology defined in (Bunt, 2010) and demonstrate its use for generating a mapping from an existing annotation scheme to a representation in GrAF format. The most important features of this methodology are (1) the distinction of the abstract and concrete syntax of an annotation language; (2) the specification of a formal semantics for the abstract syntax; and (3) the formalization of the relation between abstract and concrete syntax, which…

On the Principles of Semantic Annotation
- Computer ScienceACL 2015
- 2015
The consequences and the risks of the SemAF strategy of developing separate annotation schemes for certain classes of semantic phenomena are investigated, with the long-term aim to combine these schemes into a single, widecoverage scheme for semantic annotation.
TiCC TR 2013 – 001 A methodology for designing semantic annotations
- Computer Science
- 2013
The CASCADES model derives its usefulness from supporting a systematic design process for semantic annotations, giving due attention to the conceptual and semantic issues underlying choices in annotation formats, including support in the form of procedures for how to move from one stage of the design process to another.
Annotation of Quantification: The Current State of ISO 24617-12
- Computer ScienceACL 2020

The focus in this paper is on the structuring of the semantic information needed to characterise quantification in natural language and the representation of these structures in QuantML.
First steps towards an ISO standard for annotating discourse relations
- Computer Science
- 2012
A first attempt is described to formulate an abstract syntax and a concrete syntax for the annotation scheme underlying the PDTB, which clearly shows an overall structure for a general-purpose standard for annotating discourse relations.
Semantic Annotation of Quantification in Natural Language
- Computer Science, Philosophy

The proposed approach capitalizes on work in formal and computational semantics, notably on the theory of generalized quantifiers, on Discourse Representation Theory, and on neo-Davidsonian event-based semantics, and is compatible with the SemAF Principles of semantic annotation.
The Linguistic Annotation Framework: a standard for annotation interchange and merging
- Computer ScienceLanguage Resources and Evaluation

The XML serialization of ISO–LAF, the Graph Annotation Format (GrAF) is described and the rationale behind the various decisions that were made in determining the standard is discussed.

Bridging the gaps: interoperability for language engineering architectures using GrAF
- Computer ScienceLanguage Resources and Evaluation
- 2012
The steps required to perform a round-trip rendering from GrAF to GATE and Graf to UIMA CAS and back again are described, and the commonalities as well as the differences and gaps that came to light in the process are outlined.

The notion of an ideal representation format is introduced, which is related through an isomorphism to the set of conceptual structures, defined by the abstract syntax, that guarantees that every conceptual structure has a unique representation, and that every representation is the rendering of a unique conceptual structure.
