A 59‐year‐old woman who had had several episodes of contact urticaria after hair treatment, developed anaphylaxis after vaginal application of povidone‐iodine solution for disinfection. Prick tests showed wheal‐and‐flare responses to both povidone‐iodine (0·1% aqueous) and polyvinylpyrrolidone (povidone, PVP) (0·001% aq.), but not to iodine or polyoxy‐ethyrenenonylphenyl ether, both of which are also contained in povidone‐iodine solution. We confirmed that basophils from her peripheral blood…
A case of anaphylaxis presumably caused by a trace amount of povidone in a tablet pill
TLDR
An 18-year-old man experienced severe rhinorrhea, nasal con-gestion, eyelid swelling, cough, and dyspnea after taking multiple drugs at the same time for abdominal pain and diarrhea 20 days before the hospital visit, and symptoms disappeared after the treatment.
Anaphylaxis to Polyvinylpyrrolidone in Povidone-Iodine for Impetigo Contagiosum in a Boy with Atopic Dermatitis
TLDR
This observation was in line with the clinical findings that anaphylaxis had not developed despite the long use of PVP-I solution, but developed only when he received PVP -I solution treatment where basophils could contact PVP in the presence of serum, which was probably due to a broken skin and vessel condition.
Milky nails
TLDR
Although only a small number of povidone-allergic patients has been reported, the widespread use and the serious reactions of reported patients call for a more careful handling of this compound.
An unusual complication of late onset allergic contact dermatitis to povidone-iodine in oral and maxillofacial surgery
TLDR
Povidone-iodine is the most commonly used antiseptic solution prior to surgery, however, allergic contact dermatitis due to PVP-I has not been extensively documented or reported and hence underevaluated compared to other commonly encountered allergens.
“Iodine Allergy” and the Use of Povidone Iodine for Endophthalmitis Prophylaxis
TLDR
The antiseptic povidone iodine (PI) is a key component of endophthalmitis prophylaxis and is now standard practice not only in the operating room but also in intravitreal injection (IVI) protocols.
An unusual complication of late onset allergic contact dermatitis to povidone iodine in oral & maxillofacial surgery - a report of 2 cases.
TLDR
PVP-1 is the most commonly used antiseptic scrubbing solution prior to most surgeries, however, allergic contact dermatitis due to PVP-I has not been extensively documented or reported and hence under evaluated, compared to other commonly encountered allergens.
Allergic contact dermatitis to povidone–iodine
TLDR
A 53-year old female presented with an acute vesicular dermatitis on her left hand, palm and dorsal surface, and interdigital spaces, and contact allergy to povidone–iodine was diagnosed.
Late-Onset Allergic Reaction to Povidone-Iodine Resulting in Vulvar Edema and Urinary Retention
TLDR
Allergic reactions to povidone-iodine can be late in onset and, in vaginal surgeries, may present with atypical symptoms such as acute urinary retention secondary to extensive vulvar edema.
Polyvinylpyrrolidone storage disease presenting as pathologic fracture and anemia: Report of a case with imprint cytology
TLDR
A 65‐year‐old female patient with PVP storage disease presenting as femoral fracture and anemia is reported, with the differential diagnosis, including metastatic carcinoma, chordoma, liposarcoma, and hereditary storage disease.

The results of ingredient patch testing in contact dermatitis elicited by povidone‐iodine preparations
TLDR
It was difficult to distinguish between allergic responses from irritation, as responses to patches of povidone‐iodine and its preparations usually include irritation at high frequencies.
Anaphylaxis to polyvinylpyrrolidone in an analgesic preparation
TLDR
This case underlines the necessity to consider not only the active ingredient, but also additives as the causative agent in case of an anaphylactic reaction after oral intake of acetaminophen‐containing tablets.
Vaginal absorption of povidone-iodine.
TLDR
In pregnant women, vaginitis should not be treated with povidone-iodine because of the possible development of iodine-induced goiter and hypothyroidism in the fetus and newborn.
