Background: Povidone-iodine (PVP-I) is widely used in antiseptic agents. Immediate allergic reaction to PVP-I preparations is very rare and often overlooked, as it is difficult to diagnose. Polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) is thought to play a role in the underlying mechanism. We examined the usefulness of the histamine release test (HRT) for definite diagnosis of PVP allergy. Method: A 9-year-old boy with eosinophilia (1,500/µl) and elevated total IgE (1,376 IU/ml) was suspected clinically of having…

Efficacy and tolerability of liposomal polyvinylpyrrolidone-iodine hydrogel for the localized treatment of chronic infective, inflammatory, dermatoses: an uncontrolled pilot study
TLDR
Improvements in pain, quality of life, and Eczema Area and Severity Index scores were seen, and liposomal PVP-iodine hydrogel has potential utility as an effective treatment for inflammatory skin conditions associated with bacterial colonization.
Effectiveness of Piper betle leaf infusion as a palpebral skin antiseptic
TLDR
This study demonstrates that the mean colony counts after application of 20% Piper betle leaf infusion showed a significant reduction of 27-100% compared with those before administration (p=0.001), and the 10% povidone-iodine solution has more effective antiseptic capability.
Eluted substances from hemodialysis membranes elicit positive skin prick tests in bioincompatible patients.
TLDR
Eluted substances apart from PVP from hemodialysis membranes could cause bioincompatibility with PS membranes, but the area of the flare reaction against histamine in patients was smaller than that of healthy subjects.
Povidone-iodine solution as SARS-CoV-2 prophylaxis for procedures of the upper aerodigestive tract a theoretical framework
TLDR
A prophylactic treatment protocol for the application of topical povidone-iodine to the upper aerodigestive tract is proposed and represents a low-cost, low-morbidity measure that may reduce the risks associated with aerosol-generating procedures performed commonly in otorhinolaryngology operating rooms.
Antiseptic drugs and disinfectants
Prevention of anaphylaxis in healthcare settings
TLDR
It is important that all healthcare professionals and systems have effective, well-rehearsed protocols for risk assessment and management of this allergic emergency.
Taurolidine Lock Is Superior to Heparin Lock in the Prevention of Catheter Related Bloodstream Infections and Occlusions
TLDR
Comparisons with previous studies suggest that catheter locking with taurolidine decreases catheter-related bloodstream infections and occlusions in HPN patients compared with heparin.
Bactericidal magnetic nanoparticles with iodine loaded on surface grafted poly(N-vinylpyrrolidone).
Bactericidal magnetic nanoparticles were prepared by complexing iodine with poly(N-vinylpyrrolidone) (PVP) grown at the surface of silica coated magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) via surface-initiated

Anaphylactic shock following povidone.
TLDR
Povidone was responsible for a severe anaphylactic reaction in a 37-year-old man with a history of allergic rhinitis and the excipients used in the preparation of all medicines should be disclosed.

Anaphylaxis to polyvinylpyrrolidone after vaginal application of povidone‐iodine
TLDR
A 59‐year‐old woman who had had several episodes of contact urticaria after hair treatment, developed anaphylaxis after vaginal application of povidone‐iodine solution for disinfection, speculate that sensitization to PVP had been established by these hair care products at a beauty parlor.
Allergic contact dermatitis from iodine preparations: a conundrum
TLDR
Iodine preparations are widely used antiseptics, yet limited information exists on their irritant potential and threshold for diagnostic patch testing, so using iodine in different preparations and concentrations is recommended.
Allergic contact dermatitis from povidone‐iodine: a re‐evaluation study
TLDR
The need for more complete investigation, when testing with some allergens, when they share both irritant and allergenic properties, such as PVP‐I, is emphasized, because it is important to rule out false‐positive patch test reactions and to assess true clinical relevance.
Anaphylaxis to polyvinylpyrrolidone in an analgesic preparation
TLDR
This case underlines the necessity to consider not only the active ingredient, but also additives as the causative agent in case of an anaphylactic reaction after oral intake of acetaminophen‐containing tablets.
Anaphylaxis to povidone in a child
TLDR
The clinical case of a 9‐yr‐old male child admitted in the emergency room with anaphylaxis, in two occasions separated by a 6‐month period, revealed eosinophilia, an elevated total IgE level and positive prick‐by‐prick test for both drugs.
The results of ingredient patch testing in contact dermatitis elicited by povidone‐iodine preparations
TLDR
It was difficult to distinguish between allergic responses from irritation, as responses to patches of povidone‐iodine and its preparations usually include irritation at high frequencies.

TLDR
The current review is focussed on IgE‐dependent HRF that require the presence of certain types of IgE (designated IgE+) to induce histamine release of appropriately sensitized basophils.
