In anaesthetized rats activation of vanilloid receptors on sensory vagal nerves elicits rapid bradycardia and hypotension (Bezold-Jarisch reflex). Recent in vitro experiments revealed that the endogenous cannabinoid ligand anandamide acts as an agonist at the vanilloid VR1 receptors.
