Participatory methods have been widely adopted by researchers working on applied agricultural problems including crop breeding. This change in paradigm has implications for the design and analysis of methods used. Some of these are summarized in a companion paper by this author (see Coe 1, this proceedings). An assumption of this paper is that formal analysis of quantitative data collected systematically from trials is still an important part of the process. Without this it is difficult to see…

Farmer versus Researcher data collection methodologies: Understanding variations and associated trade-offs

The number of non-experts (such as farmers) participating in research activities has increased over the years, with the aim of them addressing their heterogeneous conditions. The situation has

From targeting to tailoring : baskets of options for legume cultivation among African smallholders

The aim of this thesis was to identify niches for sustainable intensification of agriculture through legumes for different types of smallholder farmers in sub-Saharan Africa. Two legume technologies

TURNING LOCAL KNOWLEDGE ON AGROFORESTRY INTO AN ONLINE DECISION-SUPPORT TOOL FOR TREE SELECTION IN SMALLHOLDERS’ FARMS

A user-friendly and practical tool that provides site-specific recommendations on tree species selection via simple graphical displays and is targeted towards extension services and stakeholders directly involved in sustainable agroforestry and adaptation to climate change is presented.

Participatory plant breeding approach for identifying the superior rainfed barley genotypes in Egypt

The participatory plant breeding (PPB) approach, in which the selection process is performed in the farmers’ fields, is not a widely known strategy in Egyptian agriculture. The objective of this

Participatory plant breeding research: Opportunities and challenges for the international crop improvement system

Why the centralized global approach to germplasm improvement that was so successful in the past is today being transformed by the incorporation of decentralized local breeding methods designed to better incorporate the perspective of end users into the varietal development process is explained.

Participatory evaluation and application of climate smart agriculture practices in mixed smallholder farming systems: a case-study in the semi-arid regions of Kenya

In the first phase of the CCAFS Program (Climate Change, Agriculture and Food security), climate-smart agriculture practices (CSAP) were identified and needed to be tested. In the semi-arid

Introduction and Evaluation of Tomato Germplasm by Participatory Mother and Baby Trials in the Morogoro Region of Tanzania

. Tomato is an important cash crop in many developing countries. However, smallholder farmers often lack access to improved cultivars and breeding programs to develop locally adapted cultivars are

An illustrated review of some farmer participatory research techniques

A review of farmer participatory research is given highlighting its variety and wide range of terminologies. Two types of methodology are discussed, rapid rural appraisals (RRA) and

Modelling the effect of subject‐specific covariates in paired comparison studies with an application to university rankings

In the analysis of paired comparison data concerning European universities and students' characteristics, it is demonstrated how to incorporate subject‐specific information into Bradley–Terry‐type models.

Analysis of data from experiments using double labeling.

Paired comparison, triple comparison, and ranking experiments as generalized linear models, and their implementation on GLIM

A wide variety of paired comparison, triple comparison, and ranking experiments may be viewed as generalized linear models. These include paired comparison models based on both the Bradley-Terry and
