Wave-particle interaction is a key process in particle diffusion in collisionless plasmas. We look into the interaction of single plasma waves with individual particles and discuss under which circumstances this is a chaotic process, leading to diffusion. We derive the equations of motion for a particle in the fields of a magnetostatic, circularly polarized, monochromatic wave and show that no chaotic particle motion can arise under such circumstances. A novel and exact analytic solution for…

Time-dependent transport of energetic particles in magnetic turbulence: computer simulations versus analytical theory

We explore numerically the transport of energetic particles in a turbulent magnetic field configuration. A test-particle code is employed to compute running diffusion coefficients as well as particle

Dynamics of a charged particle in progressive plane waves propagating in vacuum or plasma: Stochastic acceleration

The dynamics of a charged particle in a relativistic strong electromagnetic plane wave propagating in a nonmagnetized medium is studied first. The problem is shown to be integrable when the wave

Stochastic acceleration by an obliquely propagating wave‐An example of overlapping resonances

A simple problem exhibiting intrinsic stochasticity is treated: the motion of a charged particle in a uniform magnetic field and a single plane wave. Detailed studies of this wave‐particle

Resonance, particle trapping, and Landau damping in finite amplitude obliquely propagating waves

The equations of motion for a particle in resonance with a small finite amplitude wave (ω, k) are solved approximately, using secularity‐free perturbation theory. The wave propagates at an arbitrary

Classification and stability of plasma motion in periodic linearly polarized relativistic waves

Based on a relativistic fluid-Maxwell model, laser-induced plasma dynamics is investigated for relativistic periodic waves. Within a one-dimensional (1D) description, the Akhiezer–Polovin model is

Particle dynamics in the field of two waves in a magnetoplasma

In a magnetized plasma, particles may simultaneously be in resonance with two waves with essentially different frequencies and wave vectors. Such a situation is studied by an example of parallel

PARTICLE SCATTERING OFF OF RIGHT-HANDED DISPERSIVE WAVES

Resonant scattering of fast particles off low frequency plasma waves is a major process determining transport characteristics of energetic particles in the heliosphere and contributing to their

The relativistic motion of a charged particle in a linearly polarized homogeneous electromagnetic wave is studied using the Hamiltonian formalism and a formal solution is found for all the variables of the system.

Particle scattering in turbulent plasmas with amplified wave modes

High-energy particles stream during coronal mass ejections or flares through the plasma of the solar wind. This causes instabilities, which lead to wave growth at specific resonant wave numbers,

Relativistic motion of a charged particle in a superposition of circularly polarized plane electromagnetic waves and a uniform magnetic field

The relativistic motion of a charged particle in a superposition of circularly polarized plane electromagnetic waves and a uniform magnetic field is studied by deriving an exact solution to the

Stochasticity of Phase Trajectory of a Charged Particle in a Plasma Wave

Stochastic behavior of charged particles in finite amplitude plasma waves is studied by means of particle simulations under the condition that the perturbation scheme breaks down. The improved
