A partial library of the Escherichia coli genomic genes has been constructed, in which each clone has part of a genomic gene fused in frame with the lacZ gene in addition to its promoter and operator. DNA of randomly selected clones was sequenced, and the resultant deduced N-terminal amino acid sequences showed that 17 out of 26 genes analyzed encode unknown proteins.
