The structure and operating principle of a new kind of hybrid magnetic bearing (HMB) with permanent magnets in the rotor are introduced in this paper. Three-dimensional FEM analysis models of HMB are built first, then air-gap flux density distribution under different conditions, X-Y magnetic coupling, and the force-current characteristics are studied in sequence, some of which are compared with other kinds of magnetic bearings to throw light on the advantages of the presented HMB.
