The ability to concentrate iodide, a fundamental property of normally functioning thyroid tissue, is altered in various thyroid diseases. Given the critical role of the Na+/I- symporter (NIS) in controlling iodide access to the thyroid gland, altered expression of NIS may be responsible, at least in part, for an enhanced or diminished capacity to concentrate iodide.
