The present work is devoted to the analysis of drop impact onto a deep liquid pool. It is focused on the effects of high-energy splash regimes, caused by the impact of large raindrops at high velocities. Such cases are characterized by short time scales and complex mechanisms, and they have thus received little attention until now. The BASILISK open-source solver is used to perform three-dimensional Direct Numerical Simulations (DNS). The capabilities of the octree adaptive mesh refinement…

Oblique drop impact onto a deep liquid pool

The oblique impact of a liquid droplet onto a deep liquid pool is studied numerically with the adaptive volume-of-fluid solver Basilisk. The splashing threshold, cavity formation, cavity evolution

3D numerical simulations of oblique droplet impact onto a deep liquid pool

The oblique impact of a liquid droplet onto a deep liquid pool is studied numerically with the adaptive volume-of-fluid solver Basilisk. The splashing threshold, cavity formation, cavity evolution and

An investigation of the flow regimes resulting from splashing drops

Numerical simulations have been used to investigate the flow regimes resulting from the impact of a 2.9 mm water drop on a deep water pool at velocities in the range 0.8–2.5 m/s. The results were

Universal mechanism for air entrainment during liquid impact

When a millimetre-sized liquid drop approaches a deep liquid pool, both the interface of the drop and the pool deform before the drop touches the pool. The build-up of air pressure prior to

Experimental Study of Drop Impact on Deep-Water Surface in the Presence of Wind

AbstractThe effects of wind on the impact of a single water drop on a deep-water surface are studied experimentally in a wind tunnel. Experiments are performed by varying impacting drop diameters,

Drop impact onto a liquid layer of finite thickness: dynamics of the cavity evolution.

Experimental, numerical, and theoretical investigations of a normal drop impact onto a liquid film of finite thickness are presented, finding a good agreement with the numerical predictions of the phenomena.

On some common features of drop impact on liquid surfaces

The impact of a drop on liquid surfaces is studied experimentally and theoretically in the region of the fully developed splashing. In order to reveal the influence of viscosity and target liquid

Single drop impact onto liquid films: neck distortion, jetting, tiny bubble entrainment, and crown formation

Single drop impact onto liquid films is simulated numerically. Surface tension and gravity are taken into account, whereas viscosity and compressibility are neglected. This permits recourse to a
