The fragmentation of dihydropyridine calcium-channel antagonists are compared by electrospray ionization (ESI) and atmospheric pressure photonization (APPI). The results demonstrate that in ESI the preferred ionization process is in positive mode, with the mass spectra of [M+H]+ showing base peak ions probably formed by loss of alcohols from carboxyl groups. Conversely, in APPI, a high intense peak is observed in negative mode due to deprotonated molecule [M-H]- after two serial 1, 2-hydride… Expand

Negative ion-atmospheric pressure photoionization-mass spectrometry
TLDR
The ionization mechanism in the novel atmospheric pressure photoionization mass spectrometry (APPI-MS) in negative ion mode was studied thoroughly by the analysis of seven compounds in 17 solvent systems, and the sensitivity for the studied compounds was better in APPI, but the formation of substitution products was lower in APCI. Anisole, a new dopant for atmospheric pressure photoionization mass spectrometry of low proton affinity, low ionization energy compounds.
TLDR
It is demonstrated that the signals for analytes with low proton affinities in acetonitrile can be increased 100-fold by using anisole as the dopant for APPI, which takes the sensitivity to the same level achieved in the analysis of high PA analytes. Expand
Atmospheric pressure photoionization mass spectrometry. Ionization mechanism and the effect of solvent on the ionization of naphthalenes.
TLDR
The testing of different solvents showed that addition of buffers such as ammonium acetate, ammonium hydroxide, or acetic acid may suppress ionization in APPI, and the reactions are discussed in detail in light of thermodynamic data. Expand
