ABSTRACT In his book, Noui et singolari modi di cifrare, Giouan Battista Bellaso presented to his readers three challenge ciphertexts. Two of them are based on a polyalphabetic cipher with a mixed primary reciprocal alphabet and a long key, whereas the third one uses four independent homophonic substitution alphabets that change after each word. A successful approach to solving these ciphers, to which Bellaso gave the name “terzo modo” and “quarto modo,” performs a simulated annealing attack…

Bellaso’s 1552 cipher recovered in Venice
TLDR
A printed copy of Giovan Battista Bellaso's first polyalphabetic cipher has been found in Venice by the author, and this paper is a report of that finding.

An Algorithm for the Complete Automated Cryptanalysis of Periodic Polyalphabetic Substitution Ciphers
TLDR
FIND_PRIMARY_ALPHABET is a new cryptanalytic algorithm which solves monoalphabetic and periodic polyalphabetic substitution ciphers with 100% accuracy and is demonstrated by solving Vigenere cipher encrypted with both standard and mixed primary alphabets, Beaufort, and Variant Beaufort ciphern.

Abstract A tableau with reciprocal alphabets used with a long keyword is commonly attributed to Della Porta. This cipher had actually been published a decade before by Giovan Battista Bellaso in a
Automated Cryptanalysis of Substitution Ciphers
TLDR
Simulated annealing is used to provide an automated method for the cryptanalysis of mono-alphabetic substitution ciphers and it is shown that it provides a simple, fast and elegant solution to the crypt analysis problem which is also promising for more complex types of block cipher.
