OBJECTIVES After syphilis outbreaks were reported at 3 Alabama State men's prisons in early 1999, we conducted an investigation to evaluate risk factors for syphilis infection and describe patterns of syphilis transmission. METHODS We reviewed medical, patient interview, and prison transfer records and documented sexual networks. Presumptive source cases were identified. Odds of exposure to unscreened jail populations and transfer from other prisons were calculated for case patients at 1…
[Characteristics of cases of infectious syphilis diagnosed in prisons, 2007-2008].
TLDR
Incidence of syphilis in prison is high, and many syphilis patients were detected through screening, highlighting the role of the Spanish prison health service in STI control.
HIV Transmission in a State Prison System, 1988–2005
TLDR
Half of all HIV seroconversions were identified when routine voluntary testing was offered, and seroconverters reduced their risks following their diagnosis, suggesting resistance testing before initiating antiretroviral therapy is important for newly-diagnosed inmates.

TLDR
Lack of adherence to surveillance and clinical management protocols likely contributed to this outbreak, which was curtailed by aggressive control measures.
The vulnerability of Brazilian female prisoners to HIV infection.
TLDR
Results point to sexual behavior as the most important component of HIV transmission in the female prisoner population, and the use of injectable substances is associated with HIV infection.
Ongoing transmission of hepatitis B virus infection among inmates at a state correctional facility.
TLDR
Inmates with HBV infection were more likely than susceptible inmates to have injected drugs, have had more than 25 female sex partners, and have been incarcerated for more than 14 years to show evidence of HBV transmission.
Risk of COVID-19 infection among prison staff in the United States
TLDR
Over the study period, prison staff have reported consistently higher rates of COVID-19 compared to the general population, with prison staff case rates more closely mirroring the incarcerated population case rates.
HIV/AIDS and HCV in prisons: A select annotated bibliography (part 2)
TLDR
Part 2 of the select annotated bibliography on HIV/AIDS and HCV in prisons contains selected “essential” articles and reports that provide information about prevalence of HIV, HCV, and risk behaviours in prisons.
HIV seroprevalence and associated risk factors among male inmates at the Belize Central Prison.
TLDR
The findings suggest that HIV is likely contracted by most inmates before their incarceration, largely due to same-sex activity.

Outbreak of HIV infection in a Scottish prison
TLDR
This is the first report of an outbreak of HIV infection occurring within a prison and restricted access to injecting equipment resulted in random sharing and placed injectors at high risk of becoming infected with HIV.

TLDR
If screening and treatment for syphilis are delayed until the 14th day after booking, the majority of infected inmates will be released prior to evaluation and treatment.
Partner notification: can it control epidemic syphilis?
TLDR
Because patients infected with syphilis have relatively large numbers of anonymous sexual encounters, prevention strategies that supplement partner notification are urgently needed to control the syphilis epidemic among adults.
HIV prevention in prisons and jails: obstacles and opportunities.
TLDR
Education and risk-reduction counseling are the least controversial and most widely employed modes of prevention, but the effectiveness of current prevention efforts in reducing HIV transmission in this high-risk population is largely undetermined.
Usefulness of partner notification for syphilis control.
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES In the United States, the recent syphilis epidemic has been followed by the lowest rates in 40 years. Syphilis control in the United States traditionally emphasizes partner
New Approaches to Syphilis Control: Finding Opportunities for Syphilis Treatment and Congenital Syphilis Prevention in a Women's Correctional Setting
TLDR
Qualitative (or STAT) RPR testing and access to DOH syphilis case registry data provide prompt and accurate diagnostic information that can lead to an overall increase in the number of inmates appropriately treated (with a minimum amount of overtreatment) in a women's correctional facility.
High prevalence of syphilis detected through a jail screening program. A potential public health measure to address the syphilis epidemic.
TLDR
Screening inmates for syphilis was a productive public health measure, as inmates accounted for 20% of the county's syphilis morbidity and the inability to reach them for treatment after release.

TLDR
The absence of harm-reduction devices behind bars may create a greater risk of HIV transmission there than in the community, and officials should consider distributing risk-red reduction devices to prisoners through anonymous methods.
Can unsafe sex behind bars be barred?
TLDR
It is shown that inmates in correctional facilities do have sexual contact with each other and that unprotected sex can have devastating consequences, and syphilis was transmitted when inmates had sex in a jail and then returned to prison and had contact with new partners there.
