Abstract 1. 1. Total neutral urinary 17-ketosteroids were found to be elevated in patients with bilateral polycystic ovaries. 2. 2. Following ovarian wedge resection, there was a statistically significant decrease of these elevated steroids. 3. 3. No significant difference of ovarian tissue 17-ketosteroid levels was found between the study and control groups. 4. 4. It must be concluded from this study that the ovary does not produce the increased urinary 17-ketosteroids found in these patients.

TLDR
It has been shown that slices from ovaries of cases of the SteinLeventhal syndrome have an enhanced ability to produce the weakly androgenic steroid, androstenedione, as compared with normal ovaries (Lanthier and Sandor, 1960). Expand
Polycystic ovarian disease, maturation arrest of spermiogenesis, and Klinefelter's syndrome in siblings of a family with familial hirsutism.
TLDR
A family with hirsutism in five generations in which polycystic or bilaterally enlarged ovaries were documented in three different sibships of two generations is described, with abnormal features including precocious adrenarche, beardless males, eunuchoidism, and prepubertal grand mal seizures. Clinical and cytogenetic studies of patients with polycystic ovary disease.
TLDR
The finding of trisomy 14 in 2% to 4% of the cells in five of 15 patients with polycystic ovary disease is significant, since such an occurrence is extremely rare in the general population. Expand
Prevalence of polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) in first-degree relatives of patients with PCOS.
TLDR
The rates of PCOS in mothers and sisters of patients with PCOS were 24% and 32%, respectively, although the risk was higher when considering untreated premenopausal women only, and suggest the involvement of a major genetic component in the disorder. Expand
Hereditary factors in the Stein-Leventhal syndrome.
TLDR
The Stein-Leventhal syndrome has an hereditary basis and the transmission of the hereditary potential for the disease is consistent with a dominant mode of inheritance, probably autosomal. Expand
