An investigation of "black spot" disease of bream (Abramis brama) from the Curonian Lagoon, south-eastern Baltic Sea

  title={An investigation of "black spot" disease of bream (Abramis brama) from the Curonian Lagoon, south-eastern Baltic Sea},
  author={Olga A Shukhgalter},
“Black spot” disease of bream from the Curonian Lagoon was studied. Disease occurred in 23 % of bream. Prevalence of the black spots grew from 0.5% to 46% with increase in fish length from 2.8 to 54.0 cm, and numbers of spots per specimen increased from 1 to 268. Two types of black spots were found. The first type did not contain cysts with parasites. Spots of the second type contained cysts with metacercariae of Posthodiplostomum cuticola. The metacercariae had a wide size range (0.7 – 2.1 mm…

Figures and Tables from this paper

Turbellarian black spot disease in bluespine unicornfish Naso unicornis in New Caledonia, caused by the parasitic turbellarian Piscinquilinus sp.
The disease spread within 2 wk from a single infected fish to 3 other unicornfish in the same tank, in spite of copper sulphate and diluted seawater treatment; however, other fish from several families kept in thesame tank were not infected, suggesting specificity of these parasites.
Seasonal dynamics of Posthodiplostomum cuticola (Digenea, Diplostomatidae) metacercariae and parasite-enhanced growth of juvenile host fish
A seasonal pattern of parasite infection with maximum values in autumn was evident in all three species investigated, and the fish standard length and body weight of parasitized individuals were significantly higher than those of unparasitized fish from July to October.
Distribution of Posthodiplostomum cuticola [Nordmann, 1832] [Digenea; Diplostomidae] metacercariae in cyprinids of the Vistula Lagoon, Poland
The fins, sites that are more amenable to attachment and subsequently to penetration into the host’s tissues, turned out to be the preferred site of the parasite (60.6% of the metacercariae), while most of the parasites were located on the surface of the body below the longitudo caudalis.
Posthodiplostomum cuticola (Digenea: Diplostomatidae) in intermediate fish hosts: factors contributing to the parasite infection and prey selection by the definitive bird host
It is concluded that habitat characteristics, snail host density and fish community structure contribute significantly to P. cuticola infection in fish hosts.
Morphological and molecular characterization of Posthodiplostomum sp. (Digenea: Diplostomidae) metacercaria in the muscles of snakeheads (Channa punctata) from Manipur, India
In phylogenetic analysis, the metacercaria claded with the genus Posthodiplostomum, coming closer to the Japanese isolate, thus supplementing the morphological identification of the metACercaria.
First observation of Posthodiplostomum cuticola (Nordmann, 1832) metacercariae in cypriniformes from Croatia
During an ichthyological study of the Ilova River, rudd infected with Posthodiplostomum cuticola was observed for the first time in Croatia and the condition of the hosts and parasitological indices such as prevalence, mean abundance and mean intensity of all hosts examined were investigated.
