The transient receptor potential (TRP) ion channels are named after the role of the channels in Drosophila phototransduction. Mammalian TRP channel subunit proteins are encoded by at least 28 genes. TRP cation channels display an extraordinary assortment of selectivities and activation mechanisms, some of which represent previously unrecognized modes of regulating ion channels.
