This paper describes the design, fabrication, and clinical trial of a new ultrasound instrument designed especially for screening for carotid artery stenosis, a major cause of stroke. Using CW Vector Doppler, a low cost-per-examination instrument was made. In a small clinical trial, the new instrument had high sensitivity and specificity for detecting carotid stenoses.
