We define a model for the evolution of a long series of electric power transmission system blackouts. The model describes opposing forces, which have been conjectured to cause self-organized criticality in power system blackouts. There is a slow time scale representing the opposing forces of load growth and growth in system capacity and a fast time scale representing cascading line overloads and outages. The time scales are coupled: load growth leads to outages and outages lead to increased…

Complex dynamics of blackouts in power transmission systems.

A dynamical model of a series of blackouts in power transmission systems includes a simple representation of the dynamical evolution by incorporating the growth of power demand, the engineering response to system failures, and the upgrade of generator capacity.

Title Effect of generator flow control strategies on the long termdynamics of a model for power systems

Cascading component failure can cause systemwide blackouts in power systems. Complex system analysis of the long term dynamics suggests that power transmission systems operate near a critical point.

Critical points and transitions in an electric power transmission model for cascading failure blackouts.

Cascading failure in a simplified transmission system model as load power demand is increased is examined and it is found that operation near critical points can produce power law tails in the blackout size probability distribution similar to those observed.

Dynamics, criticality and self-organization in a model for blackouts in power transmission systems

A model has been developed to study the global complex dynamics of a series of blackouts in power transmission systems and shows a probability distribution of blackout sizes with power tails similar to that observed in real blackout data from North America.

Based on the essence of self-organized criticality, this paper develops a novel model to study the cascading failures and blackouts in power systems with optimal power flow applications, which

Modeling the Dynamics of Cascading Failures in Power Systems

This paper uses a circuit-based power flow model to study the cascading failure propagation process, and combines it with a stochastic model to describe the uncertain failure time instants, producing a model that offers predictive information about occurrences of large-scale blackouts.

Statistical classification of cascading failures in power grids

We introduce a new microscopic model of the outages in transmission power grids. This model accounts for the automatic response of the grid to load fluctuations that take place on the scale of

Initial evidence for self-organized criticality in electric power system blackouts

Initial evidence of long time correlations in a time series of electric power system blackout sizes shows some evidence of self-organized criticality, which would suggest new approaches to understanding and possibly controlling blackouts.

How nature works: The science of self-organized criticality

His ruthless simplifications of geology, evolution, and neurology pay off because his models describe behavior that is common across these domains, and this universality means that trampling across others turf is not only acceptable, but almost mandatory, if the underlying principles are to be exposed.
