Ultrastructural analysis of the statocyst, a primitive vestibular organ, of the nudibranch mollusc Hermissenda crassicornis, indicates that in addition to the basal foot, there is an infraciliary rootlet system between basal bodies of adjacent sensory cilia. These rootlets project perpendicularly from the basal bodies and parallel to the cell surface in an astral array.
