A bstractWe describe the experience of an observer falling into a black hole using the AdS/CFT correspondence. In order to do this, we reconstruct the local bulk operators measured by the observer along his trajectory outside the black hole. We then extend our construction beyond the black hole horizon. We show that this is possible because of an effective doubling of the observables in the boundary theory, when it is in a purestate that is close to the thermal state. Our construction allows us…
Asymmetric interiors for small black holes
A bstractWe develop the representation of infalling observers and bulk fields in the CFT as a way to understand the black hole interior in AdS. We first discuss properties of CFT states which are
On the interior geometry of a typical black hole microstate
A bstractWe argue that the region behind the horizon of a one-sided black hole can be probed by an analogue of the double-trace deformation protocol of Gao-Jafferis-Wall. This is achieved via a
Finite N and the failure of bulk locality: black holes in AdS/CFT
A bstractWe consider bulk quantum fields in AdS/CFT in the background of an eternal black hole. We show that for black holes with finite entropy, correlation functions of semiclassical bulk operators
Black hole microstate cosmology
A bstractIn this note, we explore the possibility that certain high-energy holographic CFT states correspond to black hole microstates with a geometrical behind-the-horizon region, modelled by a
Holography of the BTZ black hole, inside and out
A bstractWe propose a 1+1 dimensional CFT dual structure for quantum gravity and matter on the extended 2 + 1 dimensional BTZ black hole, realized as a quotient of the Poincaré patch of AdS3. The
No Holography for Eternal AdS Black Holes
It is generally believed that the eternal AdS black hole is dual to two conformal field theories with compact spatial sections that are together in a thermofield double state. We argue that this
Semiclassical black holes expose forbidden charges and censor divergent densities
A bstractClassically, the horizon of a Schwarzschild black hole (BH) is a rigid surface of infinite redshift; whereas the uncertainty principle dictates that the semiclassical (would-be) horizon
Black holes or firewalls: A theory of horizons
We present a quantum theory of black hole (and other) horizons, in which the standard assumptions of complementarity are preserved without contradicting information theoretic considerations. After
Remarks on the necessity and implications of state-dependence in the black hole interior
We revisit the ``state-dependence'' of the map that we proposed recently between bulk operators in the interior of a large anti--de Sitter black hole and operators in the boundary CFT. By refining
Falling through the black hole horizon
A bstractWe consider the fate of a small classical object, a “stick”, as it falls through the horizon of a large black hole (BH). Classically, the equivalence principle dictates that the stick is

Inside the horizon with AdS/CFT
Using the eternal BTZ black hole as a concrete example, we show how spacelike singularities and horizons can be described in terms of AdS/CFT amplitudes. Our approach is based on analytically
Comments on black holes I: the possibility of complementarity
A bstractWe comment on a recent paper of Almheiri, Marolf, Polchinski and Sully who argue against black hole complementarity based on the claim that an infalling observer ‘burns’ as he attempts to
State-Dependent Bulk-Boundary Maps and Black Hole Complementarity
We provide a simple and explicit construction of local bulk operators that describe the interior of a black hole in the AdS/CFT correspondence. The existence of these operators is predicated on the
The black hole singularity in AdS/CFT
We explore physics behind the horizon in eternal AdS Schwarzschild black holes. In dimension d > 3 , where the curvature grows large near the singularity, we find distinct but subtle signals of this
Massless black holes and black rings as effective geometries of the D1–D5 system
We compute correlation functions in the AdS3/CFT2 correspondence to study the emergence of effective spacetime geometries describing complex underlying microstates. The basic argument is that almost
Very Long Time Scales and Black Hole Thermal Equilibrium
We estimate the very long time behaviour of correlation functions in the pres- ence of eternal black holes. It was pointed out by Maldacena (2) that their vanishing would lead to a violation of a
Local bulk operators in AdS/CFT correspondence: A holographic description of the black hole interior
To gain insight into how bulk locality emerges from the holographic conformal field theory (CFT), we reformulate the bulk-to-boundary map in as local a way as possible. In previous work, we carried
Eternal Black Holes and Superselection in AdS/CFT
It has been argued i) that Lorentz-signature solutions with wormholes connecting n asymptotically AdS regions describe bulk quantum states dual to n entangled but non-interacting CFTs and ii) that
Is the firewall consistent?: Gedanken experiments on black hole complementarity and firewall proposal
In this paper, we discuss the black hole complementarity and the firewall proposal at length. Black hole complementarity is inevitable if we assume the following five things: unitarity, entropy-area
Local bulk operators in AdS/CFT: A holographic description of the black hole interior
To gain insight into how bulk locality emerges from the holographic conformal field theory, we reformulate the bulk to boundary map in as local a way as possible. In previous work, we carried out
