Twenty-four patients in whom trephine stoma formation was performed over a 4-year period are described. This procedure permits the formation of an end ileostomy or colostomy without laparotomy. It is simple, rapid, safe and allows speedy recovery. It is widely applicable and previous abdominal surgery is no contraindication.
