In order to improve our understanding of landing on small bodies and of asteroid evolution, we use our novel drop tower facility \citep{sunday2016} to perform low-velocity (2 - 40 cm/s), shallow impact experiments of a 10 cm diameter aluminum sphere into quartz sand in low effective gravities (~0.2 - 1 m/s^2). Using in-situ accelerometers we measure the acceleration profile during the impacts and determine the peak accelerations, collision durations and maximum penetration depth. We find that…

Low-velocity impacts into granular material: application to small-body landing

With the flourishing number of small body missions that involve surface interactions, understanding the mechanics of spacecraft – surface interactions is crucial for improving our knowledge about

Numerical modelling of medium-speed impacts on a granular surface in a low-gravity environment application to Hayabusa2 sampling mechanism

Even if craters are very common on Solar System body surfaces, crater formation in granular media such as the ones covering most of visited asteroids still needs to be better understood, above all

Modified granular impact force laws for the OSIRIS-REx touchdown on the surface of asteroid (101955) Bennu

The OSIRIS-REx mission collected a sample from the surface of the asteroid (101955) Bennu in 2020 October. Here, we study the impact of the OSIRIS-REx Touch-and-Go Sampling Acquisition Mechanism

Validating N-body code chrono for granular DEM simulations in reduced-gravity environments

The Discrete Element Method (DEM) is frequently used to model complex granular systems and to augment the knowledge that we obtain through theory, experimentation, and real-world observations.

A novel experimental setup for an oblique impact onto an inclined granular layer.

We develop an original apparatus of the granular impact experiment by which the incident angle of the solid projectile and the inclination angle of the target granular layer can be systematically

Numerical modeling of lander interaction with a low-gravity asteroid regolith surface

Context. The JAXA asteroid sample return mission Hayabusa2 reached its target (162173) Ryugu in June 2018 and released the European (CNES-DLR) lander MASCOT in October 2018. MASCOT successfully

Impact-Induced Energy Transfer and Dissipation in Granular Clusters under Microgravity Conditions.

A simple energy scaling can explain the energy transfer in both soft-particles and hard-particle granular targets, and the dissipative-diffusion model of energy transfer can quantitatively explain these behaviors.

The landing(s) of Philae and inferences about comet surface mechanical properties

The precise circumstances of the multiple landings of Philae, including the bouncing trajectory and rebound parameters, are reported, based on engineering data in conjunction with operational instrument data, which provide information on the mechanical properties of the comet surface.
