Three C4 acid decarboxylases, phosphoenolpyruvate carboxykinase (PEPCK), NADP-malic enzyme (NADP-ME), and NAD-malic enzyme (NAD-ME) were recruited from C3 plants to support C4 photosynthesis. In Poaceae, there are established lineages having PEPCK type species, and some NADP-ME lineages in which PEPCK contributes to C4. Besides family Poaceae, recently PEPCK has been reported to function in C4 photosynthesis in eudicot species including Cleome gynandra (Cleomaceae), Trianthema portulacastrum… Expand
Possible involvement of phosphoenolpyruvate carboxylase and NAD-malic enzyme in response to drought stress. A case study: a succulent nature of the C4-NAD-ME type desert plant, Salsola lanata (Chenopodiaceae).
TLDR
The results showed that only severe stress limited PEPC enzyme activity of S. lanata significantly, and NAD-ME activity decreased significantly under moderate and severe stress, and coincided with a change of leaf water content rather than the amount of α-NAD-ME mRNA and protein. Expand
Phylogenic and phosphorylation regulation difference of phosphoenolpyruvate carboxykinase of C3 and C4 plants.
TLDR
The results suggest that the functions of PEPCK have been conserved, but that sequences have diverged and regulation ofPEPCK is important in C4 plants, but not in herbaceous and, in particular, woody C3 plants. Expand
Transgenic maize phosphoenolpyruvate carboxylase alters leaf–atmosphere CO2 and 13CO2 exchanges in Oryza sativa
TLDR
Data indicate that ZmPEPC in the PEPC-OE rice plants contributes to leaf carbon metabolism in both the light and in the dark, and there are some factors, potentially posttranslational regulation and PEP availability, which reduce Zm PEPC activity in vivo. Expand
Gluconeogenesis and nitrogen metabolism in maize.
TLDR
It is proposed that gluconeogenesis is often a component of a widespread mechanism that is used in coordinating the import/mobilisation of nitrogenous compounds with their utilisation and may have provided building blocks that were used in the evolution of processes such as C4 photosynthesis, Crassulacean acid metabolism, stomatal metabolism and the biochemical pH stat. The Roles of Organic Acids in C4 Photosynthesis

  • Front. Plant Sci.
  • 2016
TLDR
The ability to transfer multiple organic acid species and utilize different decarboxylases has been suggested to give C4 plants advantages in changing and stressful environments, as well as during development, by facilitating the balance of energy between the two cell types involved in the C4 pathway of CO2 assimilation. Expand
C3 cotyledons are followed by C4 leaves: intra-individual transcriptome analysis of Salsola soda (Chenopodiaceae)
TLDR
Results based on &dgr;13C values, anatomy and transcriptomics clearly indicate a C3 phase during the cotyledon stage of Salsola soda, a little‐studied species from tribe Salsoleae, using an ontogenetic approach. Expand
Exploiting differences in the energy budget among C4 subtypes to improve crop productivity
TLDR
The C4 ideotype is proposed that utilizes low chloroplastic ATP requirements present in the nondomesticated phosphoenolpyruvate carboxykinase (PEP‐CK) subtype, providing a unique (theoretical) case where ΦCO2 could be improved, thereby paving a new avenue for improving photosynthesis in both C3 and C4 crops. Expand
Accumulation of the components of cyclic electron flow around photosystem I in C4 plants, with respect to the requirements for ATP
TLDR
A reverse genetic approach to generate C4 transformants with respect to CEF will be necessary, as the expression of some genes which encode proteins involved in the assembly of NDH is increased at the mRNA level in various C4 plants, suggesting that this increase is needed to increase the accumulation ofNDH. Expand
A generalized stoichiometric model of C3, C2, C2+C4, and C4 photosynthetic metabolism
TLDR
A general stoichiometric model for C3, C 2, C2+C4, and C4 assimilation (SMA) in which energetics, metabolite traffic, and the different decarboxylating enzymes are explicitly included is presented. Expand
Strategies for improving C4 photosynthesis.
TLDR
Gene candidates for improvement of C4 photosynthesis could be utilized either through transgenic approaches or via mining natural allelic variation in sequenced populations of crop species. Expand
