Remote sensing for archaeological investigations using surface response is reasonably well established, however, remote subsurface exploration is limited by depth and penetration and ground resolution. Furthermore, the conservation of archaeological sites requires constant monitoring capability, which is often not feasible between annual field seasons, but may be provided by modern satellite coverage. Here we develop an approach using Sentinel-1 C-band radar backscatter, and Sentinel-2…

Monitoring and Detecting Archaeological Features with Multi-Frequency Polarimetric Analysis

Combined dual and fully polarized SAR data is investigated and polarimetric multi-frequency and multi-incidence angle analysis of C-band Sentinel-1, L-band Advanced Land Observing Satellite Phased Array type L- band Synthetic Aperture Radar datasets for the detection of surface and subsurface archaeological structures over the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization site of Gebel Barkal is performed.

Evaluating the Potentials of Sentinel-2 for Archaeological Perspective

An extensive spectral library of crop marks, acquired through numerous spectroradiometric campaigns, which are related with buried archaeological remains, has been resampled to the spectral characteristics of Sentinel-2, and it was found that these characteristics are able to better distinguish crop marks compared to other existing satellite sensors.

Abstract. Geological mapping in desert, mountainous or densely vegetated areas are sometimes faced with many constraints. Recently several remote sensing methods are used on ASTER or LANDSAT imagery

Retrieval of soil salinity from Sentinel-2 multispectral imagery

ABSTRACT Soil salinity is a widespread environmental hazard and the main causes of land degradation and desertification, especially in arid and semi-arid regions. The first step in finding such a

SAR for Landscape Archaeology

This chapter provides an overview of the opportunities that image analysts, archaeologists, and conservation scientists currently have by using space-borne synthetic aperture radar (SAR) imagery for

Evaluation of the potential of Sentinel-1 and Sentinel-1 data for clay content mapping

Soil texture is a key parameter in agricultural processes and an important measure for agricultural prediction, water cycle, filtering of pollutants and carbon storage. Besides, its estimation is

Sensitivity of Sentinel-1 backscatter to characteristics of buildings

ABSTRACT In this study, Sentinel-1 interferometric wide swath (IW) mode backscatter is analysed with respect to physical parameters of buildings in Tallinn, Estonia. Dependence on height, alignment,
