Biosynthesis of the indolic hormone melatonin has been reported in the pineal gland and retina. The terminal step of melatonin synthesis is catalysed by hydroxyindole-O-methyltransferase (HIOMT), an enzyme displaying highest levels of activity in the pineal gland and retina.
