Abstract The problem of user error in medical expert systems is discussed. Human users are often not accustomed to the rigour demanded by computers, while computers are generally intolerant of human imprecision. Incorrect or insufficient entry of data into an expert system will usually result in errors in deduction by the computer, and these errors in turn lead to user frustration.
