A novel technique has been proposed and related experimental works have been performed in order to detect the partial discharges and the location of the possible defects introduced into the Gas Insulated Switchgear. For this purpose, a prototype HY Pockels sensor has been developed and then employed in order to investigate its field applicability for finding the location of the defects using a 170kV GIS mock-up.
