Abstract—Geofence is a virtual fence defined by a preset physical radius around a target location. Geofencing App provides location-based services which define the actionable operations upon the crossing of a geofence. Geofencing requires continual location tracking, which can consume noticeable amount of battery power. Additionally, location updates need to be frequent and accurate or order so that actions can be triggered within an expected time window after the mobile user navigate through…

Horizontal Cybersurveillance Through Sentiment Analysis

This Essay describes emerging big data technologies that facilitate horizontal cybersurveillance through sentiment analysis as adversely impacting a combination of constitutional rights, such as simultaneously affecting both First and Fourth Amendment freedoms.

An economically viable solution to geofencing for mass-market applications

This work presents an economically viable geofencing solution that scales to large populations and supports a high number of fences per subscriber through distributed processing supported by an appropriate client-server protocol and optimizes the air interface usage and mobile battery power.

Improving the Energy-Efficiency of GPS Based Location Sensing Smartphone Applications

This work presents an accelerometer based architecture that reduces GPS energy-consumption without compromising on either the location accuracy or sampling rate, and proposes a method to not only detect that a user is non-stationary but also classify a representative set of mobility states.

WalkTheDroid, a location simulator based on the Android emulator, uses recorded location tracks and device profiles to carry out different virtual test scenarios simultaneously, and provides a versatile and flexible simulator not only for the evaluation of energy- efficiency in different background tracking algorithms but also provides a tool for virtually walking around to test location-based applications.

Energy-Efficient Position Tracking in Proactive Location-Based Services for Smartphone Environments

A hierarchical positioning algorithm is proposed, which provides a general algorithmic optimization in order to extend existing positioning APIs to energy-efficiently track a user's position without diminishing accuracy.

Location-Based Services

This special issue showcases papers that describe recent research that addresses the challenges of location sensing more robust, accurate, deployable, secure, and developer-friendly.

An Energy Consumption Model for Java Virtual Machine

A general framework for estimating the energy consumption of an embedded Java virtual machine and finding the constants overhead of the Virtual Machine and establishing energy consumption cost for individual Java Opcodes is established.
