When I finished writing Teaching by Numbers in 2009, the grim state of education seemed as if it couldn't get any worse, but, as we know, it has. The Obama administration has mandated more high stakes testing, allowed charter schools to proliferate, tied teacher job security to student test scores, and most recently made funding for teacher education programs contingent on meeting various metrics, including their graduates' own students' test scores.
