Abstract We present a linear model of intraseasonal oscillations produced by the interaction of an atmosphere on an equatorial Beta-plane with a fixed ocean. Convection is treated as a means of rapidly redistributing in the vertical heat acquired from the sea surface, rather than as a heat source in and of itself. The model produces a spectrum of equatorially trapped oscillating instabilities, among which is an eastward-propagating wavenumber 1 disturbance with an intrinsic phase speed in the…
Characteristics of the tropical intraseasonal oscillation in the NCAR community climate model
SUMMARY The structure of the intraseasonal oscillation in a perpetual January integration of the NCAR Community Climate Model (CCM) is analysed and compared with observations. The simulated
Poleward-Propagating Intraseasonal Monsoon Disturbances in an Intermediate-Complexity Axisymmetric Model
Abstract A model of intermediate complexity based on quasi-equilibrium theory—a version of the quasi-equilibrium tropical circulation model with a prognostic atmospheric boundary layer, as well as
Instability of the axisymmetric monsoon flow and intraseasonal oscillation
[1] A linear model of intermediate complexity based on quasi-equilibrium theory is used in a zonally symmetric aquaplanet configuration to investigate the stability of the mean summer monsoon flow in
Intraseasonal Variability in a Dry Atmospheric Model
Abstract A long integration of a primitive equation dry atmospheric model with time-independent forcing under boreal winter conditions is analyzed. A variety of techniques such as time filtering,
An evaluation of the structure of tropical intraseasonal oscillations in three general circulation models
The attributes for the simulation of tropical intraseasonal oscillations in the 30 to 60 day range by three GCMs are compared with analyses of the European Center for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts.
Impact of Air-Sea Coupling on the Madden-Julian Oscillation in a General Circulation Model
Abstract The impact of air–sea coupling on the dynamics of the tropical Madden–Julian oscillation (MJO) is investigated with an atmospheric general circulation model (GCM) coupled to an ocean mixed
Genesis of intraseasonal oscillations and equatorial waves
Abstract The particular role of evaporation–wind feedback, and as well cumulus convection and dissipation, in the formation of the Madden–Julian 30–60-day intraseasonal oscillation (MJO) and
The dynamical influence of land-sea contrast and sea surface temperature on intraseasonal oscillation in tropical atmosphere
An equatorialΒ-plane model which includes realistic non-uniform land-sea contrast and the underlying surface temperature distribution is used to simulate the 30–60 day oscillation (LFO) processes in
A Model for the Boreal Summer Intraseasonal Oscillation
Abstract The tropical intraseasonal oscillation (ISO) exhibits pronounced seasonality. The boreal summer ISO is more complex than its winter counterpart due to the coexistence of equatorial eastward,
Air–Sea Interactions of Relevance to the ITCZ: Analysis of Coupled Instabilities and Experiments in a Hybrid Coupled GCM
The eastern Pacific and Atlantic have a curious climatic asymmetry relative to the equator. Whereas the intertropical convergence zone (ITCZ) characterized by persistent and heavy rainfall and the
